Oh, My, It's Been a While
No photos today, just a quick check in to let my reader know taht I am okay.
Fair came and went. I had 30 entries and got ribbons for 25 of them.
Work is beyond incredibly busy and has been occupying most of my time lately.
There will be pictures and there will be projects. For the moment a reminder that the Mittnz need to be in the mail in another week or so in order to have them arrive at Cheyenne River in time for the Annual October Mittnz Blitz.
Remember that if you make a pair and get them in the mail

Still More Mittnz
Marianne joins the Overachievers-R-Us club with her offering of 18 pairs of Mittnz this year.
I like the blue and gold pair in the front. Can you tell? They are fraternal twins!
I must confess that my own Mittn knitting has taken a back seat to fair entries and princling knitting. Warping the loom for some dishtowels that the Other Half requested didn't help the cause either.
I will personally be filling in the gap with many purchased pairs this year.
It isn't too late to get in on the fun. There are prizes (oh, my) including some hanks of (donated) Socks that Rock.
All you need do is:
1) Knit ten pairs.

It's been a long week! We are awaiting the arrival of the Tiny Prince's baby brother (quite a stressful time since he's not due for several weeks, but is determined to be a September baby)!
And it's been a rough week at work.

This Just In
Barbara D finished her first set of ten pairs!She sent the photo at left as proof, so she has her name first in the hat for the prize draw. Click on the photo to make it bigger.
Prizes for this challenge are "modest." There are no signed first edition knitting books by famous designers (though the value of my first edition of Aran Knitting just plummeted--bitter? moi? Never! But I digress.) or full bag packs of yak fuzz yarn.
Instead, there will be patterns and yarn (sufficient to make a nice pair of handwarmers for the recipient) and other nice things. Modest.
Oh, and Barbara (the overachiever) also made some Hatz! Ans socks. Yay, Barbara!

Announcing Mittnz 2010
This is way late, but (hopefully) not a dollar short. It's time to be thinkn about knittn Mittnz!
This year's goal is 10 pairs, handmade.
The target organization has not changed. We are doing this for Cheyenne River Reservation and the Youth Project there.
By late September, there's a nip in the air in South Dakota, and by October, it's downright cold!
So. . .
I am issuing a challenge to my readers to knit or crochet 10 pairs of Mittnz. Fiber (in order of preference, based on the warm factor): Wool or other animal fiber (regular or superwash), blends that are mostly wool (like sock yarn, held double or more), blends that are less than 50% wool (WoolEase, Decor, Encor and the like), acrylic.
Mittnz can be any size from tiny baby thumbless ones to great big ones for Big Man hands. Colors should be "appropriate" to the intended If you want to make matching hats, go for it (I did). If you want to make wristwarmers or mitts, please include a pair of "magic gloves" with them. These can be purchased as inexpensively as 2 pairs for $1 at dollar stores and Target-type places. They really add to the warm!
When you finish your 10 pairs, snap a picture and send it to abmcmanus AT verizon DOT net. Mail your Mittnz the last week in September. As always, this is a planned blitz! I hope that the staff at the Youth Center looks forward to this early autumn storm of warm hand covers.

Important Announcement
Heet the Feet has been put on Temporary Hold
while I complete a special request.
Older Son asked for "something warm" to fit the small daughter (about 1) of one of his colleagues.
And here it is, nearly finished. Just needs the second sleeve finished (should/could happen today), ends woven in, and 6 pretty buttons.
Elizabeth informs me that the pattern is still available for free at Knitting Pure and Simple.
Sadly, the yarn isn't. It's Plymouth Outback Wool. Random hanks might be still "out there," and I have 2 left in this colorway and 1/2 of another in brighter shades. Nice stuff.
We have company this weekend. We're having fun!
And Connie sent me these that I'll be forwarding to Cheyenne River next week when I send my monthly box. Aren't they cute? The little ones are LB Al-Pa-Ka. Probably the last of its kind anywhere in the known universe!

Did Someone Say Prizes?
First of all, thanks to everyone who participated in this year's Mittnz Challenge. You knit, sewed, crocheted or bought an incredible 644 pairs of Mittnz.
How is that compared to prior years? Well, to be honest, the total is low. (And though it bugs the sh*t out off me to hear other people say it) In this economy, that's phenomenal!
This is most of the prizes for this year's Mittnz Challenge. I will admit that one was "missing on picture day" and I am tearing the house apart looking for it!
Somewhere in this room is a set of KnitPicks double points. I thought I put them in the box with all of the other prizes as they arrived, but damned if they can be found!
I have conducted the official random draw of all nine-pair participants, and am pleased to announce that the following ::drumroll, please:: kniiters/sewers/crocheters should be expecting an email from me requesting a mailing address.

Don't throw away those ticket stubs yet! I will still be awarding the needles as soon as i find them.
You would be amazed at how clean and neat parts of this room are. You would be equally amazed at the mess everywhere else, I'm sure!

Day 14
One more down.
This one (Thursday) is later in the day than the rest, 10:30 vs. 9, and so it's somethat possible to track symptoms. A passing fever spike that occurs shortly after treatment is "somewhat normal." After all, the radiation is burning (think severe sunburn).
This, too, shall pass. I plan to leave work early tomorrow (after a neen meeting), get my flu shot, and rest up for Monday.

Imaginary Friends Come Through
My Imaginary Friends, Gail, Jaya, Joy, Mel, Stephanie, Ann, and Kerry, all knowing about this annual Mittnz challenge, got together and knit up a bunch of get-well goodies, because they knew that warm hands on the Reservation would also mean a warm heart in my irradiated chest. They sent me Mittnz.A couple of other IFs are sending their Mittnz direct (hi, Jenny). And I know as sure as I am breathing that I have forgotten someone! And so, I will apologize in advance for the unintended slight.
There is such an interesting assortment there. All are wool for extra warmth.
These goodies were in with the Mittnz.
There were cards and notes and postage, too.
I have some wonderful Imaginary Friends these days, not like that nasty old Sidney that haunted my childhood. Bad, bad Sidney, always doing evil stuff that I got blamed for!
::ahem!::
And Week 2 is finished and done. Only 4.5 to go. Yep. Today was Day 10. Monday is Day 11. Tuesday is Day 12 and so on. (Not that I'm counting or anything.)
Today, I noticed some redness to go along with the internal (infernal) pulling sensation. It was coming. I knew it. And now it's here.

Mittnz Link
Jenn sent me a link to her Mountain of Mittnz. Follow the link, but come on back. She sure stepped up to the plate!
So, Day 6. I am still exhausted. Even though I slept an extra hour last night.
Tomorrow, I get to speak with the radiologist (It's scheduled. I can talk to her any old time I want to, but on Tuesday, she wants to talk to me.)
So, I have the cream and I'm taking warm (not hot) showers, and doing all the things I'm supposed to (and avoiding the things I'm not supposed to do). And eating well, and getting a little (very little) exercise.
And I'm tired. Very tired.
I came home early today to meet the plumber (don't ask).
I actually did quite a bit of work at home (read about 50 of the 60+ resumes we have for one position, participated in a 75 minute long conference call). You know, relaxing afternoon at home.
Not!
And tomorrow promises to be just as thrilling.
