Another FO

There's been little to show of late because I have put all my time and energy into this giant mitered square blankie.

Thought originally that it might be a baby Drag Around, but clearly, it is too large for that.

And too heavy too.

It's 54" square and weighs in at nearly 5 pounds.

And it's mostly odd balls of leftover stuff. If the yarn had all been newly bought for this project, you'd be looking at 22-100 gram skeins.

I did wind up buying yarn to complete it (since I really wanted it color-coordinated).

The bright turquoise, some of the royal blue (2 different balls from 2 different manufacturers), and some of the kelly green were purchased to supplement what was already in the scrap bag.

The rest is legitimate odds and ends.

Lots of Red Heart, some Sidar Snuggly, and lord only knows what else.

And now, it's all folded up and ready for mailing.

And I've started another. This one is smaller mitered squares all joined from pick up an knit edges in shades of all sorts. A true Odd Ball laprobe.

Particulars of the one I just finished: Cast on 400 stitches, placing a marker at the center. Knit every row. Decrease each side of the marker every other row until 2 stitches remain. Knit 2 together.

I picked up stitches (one per cast on or garter ridge) on each side and added a 7 row border, binding off in purl ala "log cabin" style blankets.

Wow, Am I Behind!

It seems that nearly a week has passed since I wrote. Apologies. It's been a busy week.

I am heading into a 3-Day (rescheduled from a 4-day because of "press of business," it being "the holidays" and all [minor rant: people need to eat every day, preferably more than once].

The Other Half has been away at a training session (just far enough that commuting wasn't an option) so I had the house to myself for 3 days (that's like a vacation in itself). I watched no television. I ate what I wanted. I knit exactly 1 row on the giant mitered square.

On Thursday, I met with the medical oncologist I saw in September. The nurse drew blood and did an instant analysis (everything is good). I've lost 7 pounds since September [w00t]. There was a registering of surprise (shock) that I had no bloodwork at all during radiation (apparently that's routine, but what the heck).

Anyway, I now have a prescription for tamoxifen which I will probably take for the next 5 years. Along with the radiation, this drug is the protocol of choice for preventing recurrance of breast cancer. I go back in May for follow-up on the drug, July for my next mammogram (and an MRI), in 2 weeks with the radiologist. . .Will it ever end?

Brainstorm

So, I'm working on this giant mitered square that is destined for Cheyenne River when it suddenly came to me. . .

Now, this one, at 52" along the side is clearly Not Large Enough, but I'm thinking that if I cast on 250 stitches, it would be about 65" on a side, knit until it's down to 150 stitches (100 rows) or about 20" into it and voila shawl!

I'm sure I'm not the first knitter to think of this!

Something Cute

Isn't this cute?

The Tiny Prince likes to help his Mama with the dusting so when I saw this at the grocery store last week, I Could Not Resist. (Hey, get 'em used to it while they're little. Some woman will thank you a hundred times over in 25 or 30 years!)

Here's the business side of it.

I want one for me!

Make Way For Ducklings

I love living is a small town! We often get to stop for ducks crossing the road.

This was just a small part of the parade. There were dozens, all walking across. We decided that the parade was over when a couple of them turned around and started back the way they came.

Plugging Along

I've been out of the loop. Sorry.

We've been seasonally busy at work and are having some staff (good) shifting, butp eople have been oinkishly sick (if you get my drift) and so, afternoons, I have come home and crashed (and played Farm Town and Farmville) and have neglected to update the blog.

The good news is that while I am still tired and have my lifting restricted temporarily, I am feeling so very much better.

The knitting has been limited to the mindless variety:

This is the current in process scrapghan which will be either

1) a baby blanket for the current Native Support "baby shower" taking place all month for the WIC Center at Cheyenne River Reservation or

2) a laprobe for the Senior nutrition program.

The look of the finished 'ghan (and the finish date) will determine where I mail it.

Baby shower is this month, elder blitz is usually for Valentine's Day. If I can't make the case for it looking "baby" (and you know I can stretch that case pretty far) it will go to the Elders anyway.
It's a big (cast on 400) mitered square made of all the blue and green acrylic in the Tiny Prince's scrap bag.

And in other knitting knews, the troops need warm woolies. This is a gaiter that I am mailing off to Ship Support (along with some goodies). It's 100% wool (required for the ground forces). Just a little Hug From Home for a deployed soldier.

Winter is coming fast over there. Good news because the fighting all but stops in Afghanistan because everything is snowed in. Bad news because it's very, very cold in the mountains.
Gaiters and hats use very little yarn and are quick knits. Two nights of tv knitting in that one.

In Which There are Prizes

No, sillies, not here!

here!

I was lucky enough (very, very lucky, thanks to my fiend fried friend Rabbitch ) to snag a copy of Franklin's book autographed personally to me (so there!) and so, I am reluctantly relinquishing my personal (bought by me) copy of It Itches to a lucky winner who has donated to the Red Scarf Project.

But wait. There's more!

I am also very pleased to call Ilene Hochberg friend.

My lord, yes, the author of Catmopolitan and other wonderful furry take-offs on popular ::ahem:: human titles lives right here where I do--imagine! She has graciously autographed a copy of her Stylish Knits for Dogs (which is endorsed by the incomparable Mr. Jeffries, as it contains not one single neon acrylic version--though, I guess if you really wanted to, you could sub Red Heart--but please don't tell Mr. J or me!) for the Red Scarf Project.

(Did I mention that there are a couple of great scarf patterns to match the doggy sweaters? And a couple of sweaters for the human at the other end of the leash?)

Hop on over to Norma's blog, follow the instructions for donating to the Red Scarf Fund, then cross your fingers. You could be the wiener winner.

(That was a daschund joke! Did you catch it?)
